AUDITION NOTICE
1.Formed in 1977, the Singapore Wind Symphony (SWS) is one of the most established ensembles of its kind in Singapore, representing the high standards of music making in the wind band genre.
2.Under the musical direction of Mr. Adrian Tan, the SWS will make its musical mission to champion Singaporean composers and their music. This presents new levels of technical and musical challenges for the SWS, and thus the capability of its musicians is of critical importance to the band’s success.
3. The audition is divided into 2 sections:
a.Candidate’s Selections.
i.Quick Tempo. Rhythmic musical excerpt, study or technical exercise exhibiting the ability of the musician to play rapid passages and demonstrate dynamics and articulation.
ii.Slow Tempo.Lyrical musical excerpt, study or technical exercise exhibiting the ability of the musician to play legato passages and demonstrate his/her expressiveness.
iii.Percussionists.Instead of the abovementioned, percussionists are to perform excerpts from one tuned percussion instrument AND one untuned percussion instrument.
b.Sight Reading Selection.The candidate will be required to sight-read a selection designated by the audition panel. The candidate will be given 5 minutes to review the piece before being requested to perform the selection from beginning to end for the audition panel.
4.Candidates who wish to audition should complete and submit the SWS Application Form below. The candidates will be allocated a time slot on the audition date, and must be punctual or his/her opportunity to audition may be forfeited.
5.At the end of the audition, the candidate may be subjected to a short interview during which personal particulars, music training and experience as well as motivations for joining the SWS will be clarified.
6.Candidates will be informed of the results of the audition via e-mail within 5 working days. Successful candidates will be required to pay the joining fee and relevant membership fees as stipulated in the constitution at the first rehearsal.
7.The results decided by the audition panel are final.
8.Members admitted through the audition process will abide by the stipulations in the SWS constitution pertaining to membership, and the established rules and regulations.
9.Candidates who are not selected through the audition may be invited by the committee to perform as Guest Players in the SWS before the next audition.
